WOMEN’S SINGLES

No one saw Danielle Collins coming. Competing in her first Australian Open and first Grant Slam semi-final, she couldn’t quite squeak out a win versus No. 8 Petra Kvitova. Kvitova now plays No. 4 Naomi Osaka of Japan in the final on 2/25. Read more about Collins‘ incredible run in this WTA article.

MIXED DOUBLES

A team of wildcard Australians beat Nicole Melichar and partner Bruno Soares of Brazil in the semifinals. Melichar had never competed in a mixed doubles Grand Slam.

OTHER AMERICAN WOMEN WHO ARE WINNING

You may not know there are other events happening at the Australian Open besides the ones you see on TV and that conquer the headlines. And two American teenagers have silently been advancing in Melbourne, all the way to the Junior Girls Doubles finals. The Duke-bound duo of Chloe Beck and Emma Navarro. The pair made it to the doubles semifinals of the 2018 Junior U.S. Open, so they’re not unfamiliar with competing in a Grand Slam at this level. They play for the title on 2/25.
