The American women’s soccer team has officially confirmed their place at the 2015 World Cup tournament with a 6-0 rout of Costa Rica over the weekend to win their fifth CONCACAF Women’s Championship. Abby Wambach, the USWNT’s all-time leading scorer, led the charge with her second four-goal game, setting the American record for career World Cup qualifying goals with 18 in the process (Michelle Akers previously held the mark with 17). Teammate Carli Lloyd added a goal and two assists for the United States, who outscored their opponents 21-0 during their five wins in the tournament that determines which CONCACAF teams qualify for next summer’s World Cup in Canada.
The US team was able to dominate play despite missing star forward Alex Morgan, who sprained her ankle in an earlier game and was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. The Americans are now 26-1-0 all-time in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, with their only loss coming to Mexico in the 2010 semifinals.
