The USA Women’s National Basketball team beat Spain this weekend to win their second straight gold medal in the World Championships. Spain, expected to challenge the U.S., was routed 77-64. Maya Moore led the charge with 18 points, enough to crown her the game’s MVP. But Sue Bird came away with the honor of being the most-decorated player in world championship history.
The USA owns a record eight gold medals, one silver and two bronze in Championship play since the formation of the Women’s National Team in 1995. It has compiled an over-all 60-0 record, 52-0 in exhibition games and 8-0 in Olympic gold. In 2012 the USA captured an unprecedented fifth-straight Olympic gold medal. No other women’s traditional sports team has ever accomplished such a feat. Including FIBA Americas Championships and World Championships, the USA Women’s National Teams have compiled a remarkable 80-1 official record since 1996! Congratulations, ladies!
