KATIE LEDECKY has put everyone, especially the men, on notice!  When USA Swimming announced the qualifying time standards for the 2016 Olympic Trials recently, it was revealed that Katie had made the men’s qualifying time for the 1,500m freestyle…easily!  But wait, there’s more: she also made the men’s standard for the 400m freestyle! Her best was a world record 3:58.37.  The men’s standard is 3:58.69 (women’s is 4:17.99).

Katie’s best 1,500m of 2014 was a world record 15:28:36; the men’s 2016 Olympic trials standard is 15:49.99.  How unfortunate that there is no women’s 1,500m in the Olympics, even though it is contested in the world meet. The only other woman who might have made the men’s standard is Janet Evans in 1988. It’s pretty clear who will excel in that event!

With her accomplishment in the 400m she stands alone. Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps‘ coach, says she’s “on another planet” in that event. She will only get better before 2016!
