VARVARA LEPCHENKO. Don’t be confused by the name. Varvara is a bona-fide American tennis player! In September 2007, she became a U.S. citizen and announced that she would represent the United States in WTA and ITF tournaments. She and her family, whose Russian-Ukrainian heritage allegedly made them a target of persecution in their homeland, were granted political asylum by the United States. They had lived in the U.S. for more than five years when Varvara began representing the United States. She represented the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She currently lives in Pennsylvania and trains with the USTA in New York City.
Varvara has been a consistent winner on the ITF Circuit from 2005-2011. She has played singles and doubles in all of the Grand Slam tournaments (Australian, French and U.S. Opens and Wimbledon) since 2012 and made it to the Quarterfinals in doubles at the French in 2013. Her highest ranking was #19 in 2013 and she is currently ranked #59. She is expected to have a good run during the U. S. Open which was evidenced by an impressive semi-finals appearance at the Open warmup at the Bank of the West tournament this weekend in Stanford, CA. We welcome her and we are proud to have her represent us!
