Future Tennis Champions Series: Coco Vandeweghe

COCO VANDEWEGHE first got our attention with her last name.  Not only is she the granddaughter of 1952 Miss America Colleen Kay Hutchins, but she is also the niece of basketball player Kiki Vandeweghe and the daughter of Olympic swimmer, Tauna Vandeweghe.

Coco  made her WTA debut in the  2007 Acura Classic as a wildcard, but her career really began to take flight after receiving a wildcard entry into the 2008 US Open Girls’ Singles tournament, which she won without losing a set. Her performance earned her a wildcard into the 2008 US Open women’s single draw but she lost in the first round to Jelena Jankovic.

In 2009, Coco got her first WTA tournament win and gained another wildcard entry to qualify for the 2009 US Open.  But she failed to qualify. In 2010  she struggled but persevered to win two ITF tournaments which helped  her to climb in the ranking.

Over the past three years, Coco has been a consistent player in the US Open.  In 2014 she competed in the Australian and the French grand slams as well. The Wimbledon draw has not been released yet, but our bet is that her name will be on it, and on this year’s US Open as well!
